On Being a Doorkeeper in the House of God

A Devotional Thought

In reading through the litany of names in First Chronicles, I came to chapter 9, verse 13. There it lists a number of names of those who were chosen for the unique service of being porters. The porters were the gatekeepers, or doorkeepers. 

Notice what 1 Chronicles 9:22 states, “All these which were CHOSEN TO BE PORTERS in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ORDAIN IN THEIR SET OFFICE” (emphasis added).

David would later write, Psalm 84:10 — “For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, Than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.”

Notice the place of honor that is given this seemingly menial task.

In the Old Testament Tabernacle, great importance was placed upon those who were the doorkeepers. Throughout the Chronicles, they are referred to as “porters” or “doorkeepers.” Their function was that of ensuring that the gates and doors were open and available for the worshippers to enter. No door was to be blocked nor locked.

This should remind us that, in God’s service, there are no menial tasks. All service for God is important, when done for His glory. Every task done with a humble heart for His glory is a worthy calling.

The last phrase of this verse reveals the fact that they were ordained, or set apart, for this service of God. They were not someone who simply was asked to do the job, and they said “I guess so,” or “If I have to.” These were those who were chosen and set apart for this holy task.

What a challenge to serve our Great God for His glory, and for His honor!
