God’s Greatest Creation
Text: Psalm 8:4 — “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?
One morning I was awakened at 3:48am, and could not go back to sleep. I was turning and tossing, when it occurred to me that the Lord may have something He is trying to speak to me about.
As I read Psalm 8, I was challenged concerning my lack of pursuit in the areas of wisdom and knowledge. The Lord knows that I need more wisdom, more discernment and more understanding. The task of the ministry is large and daunting. Without Godly wisdom, it all will certainly come to naught and disappointment.
Upon reading Psalm 8, my mind and heart were immediately challenged upon reading verses 3-4. Mankind is consumed with the pursuit of answering the question, “Where did I come from?” Yet, the Bible speaks only briefly of the creation of man. The full account, as given in Genesis, is contained in two brief chapters. God’s account of creating the stars is summed up with five words, “He made the stars also” (Gen. 1:16). According to Psalm 8, verse 3, the creating of the universe was merely the “work of thy fingers.” Amazing! The very thing that has caused man to devote countless hours and invest untold billions into its research, is simply finger-work with God. What an awesome and powerful God we serve!
This should cause much contemplation upon Psalm 8, verse 4. When considered in contrast, it is amazing to David that the infinite Creator of the universe could give any thought to mortal man. Man, which is nothing but dirt (Gen. 2), is the crowning creation of God! God gives to man the supremacy over the rest of His creation (Psa. 8:5-8). It is all by His design and by His grace.
Therefore, how can man be so prideful? Man’s appointments are nothing of his own but, rather, a Divine allotment from God Himself. This is overwhelming to David! He writes, “What is man, that thou are mindful of him?” The word “mindful” is the Hebrew word that means “to mark, or to remember.” The mighty God of Heaven wants to remember mortal man. Why? It is certainly not because of man’s accomplishments, for everything he has was appointed to him by God. It is certainly not because of his superior ranking, for he is still a “little lower than the angels.” No, the answer to “why” is simply because man is the object of God’s love.
My reading continued in Psalm 68. Verse 6 states, “God setteth the solitary in families.” It reminds me that with God, you are never alone! For those who are lonely, God desires to be their companion. For those who feel bound, God wants to be their freedom (Psa. 68:6b, “he bringeth out those which are bound with chains.”
And, with that, I can now lay me down and sleep (Psalm 3:5).
