3 Reasons Leaders Should Always Arrive Early

The greater somethingโ€™s importance in a personโ€™s mind, the more that value will be outwardly demonstrated. For instance, many employees view their daily occupation simply as a โ€œjob.โ€ As a result, they arrive at the exact moment the boss says they are to be there and leave at the exact moment they are allowed to leave. These people are typical โ€œclock-punchers.โ€ They rarely rise above mediocrity and are seldom the ones who move up the corporate ladder.

Who are the up-and-coming leaders of a company? Notice the man or woman who comes to work a few minutes early and does so with a smile. This is often the same person who becomes so engaged in their work that they hardly notice when the workday is over.

The greater the importance, the greater the commitment to ensuring success. Effective leaders are not those who do only the bare minimum. They go the โ€œextra mileโ€ and do what is unexpected. They arrive early because they want to ensure everything is ready for success. They also want to communicate the importance and excitement of the event to those they lead.

Early arrival communicates that an event matters. For example, people are often hesitant to dine at a restaurant with no customers, while a busy restaurant naturally signals value and appeal. Likewise, attendees or guests are more likely to sense that something meaningful and exciting is happening when they see leadership already present and prepared.

The greater the importance, the more committed a leader will feel to supporting his or her leader. Leaders who desire success make a personal commitment to lead by example. Their early arrival communicates loyalty, preparedness, and support.
