The Wrong Target in Gun Control

In recent days, the issue of gun control laws has dominated the news headlines. President Obama’s administration is making it a top issue, and there is a veiled threat to use the privilege of Executive Order to ban certain guns and, thus, bypass Congress and the Constitution.

The prevailing philosophy of the liberal left is that criminalizing the ownership of guns will provide safer communities, because no one will have guns. Obviously, the glaring problem with their flawed reasoning is that, by definition, criminals do not obey laws. How foolish it is to believe that, if the government removes guns from the hands of law-abiding citizens, it also removes them from the hands of criminals. The Aurora, Colorado theater shooter did not obey the law of the theater that had posted “No Weapons” signs. As a matter of fact, he purposely chose that particular theater because it was the only one with a twenty-minute drive of his house that had such signs posted. The other theaters permitted concealed carry.

The issue of gun control will be a long debated issue. However, it is my opinion that the focus is on the wrong target. Guns should not be the target. Deaths, that are related to guns alone, are a very small percentage of violent deaths. The media and the liberals are constantly proclaiming the numbers of deaths that are attributed to guns. Any sane and reasonable person realizes that guns are inanimate objects, with no will or power of their own. For a gun to shoot, someone must pull the trigger. Yes, I realize that certain guns can fire if dropped, but those are not the issue in the current debate and account for a negligible number of incidents.

Therefore, understanding that someone must pull the trigger, let us consider one glaring omission of the media and the liberal left. What would the gun death statistics look like, if all alcohol induced shootings were removed from the numbers? What if all the drug motivated shootings were removed? Your are correct, if you said the number of deaths by guns would be reduced to a very minimum number.

Therefore, it is reasonable to ask why no one is exposing the alcohol as a target for tighter and more restrictive laws. Alcohol is responsible for more deaths that guns every year. Yet, the general public remains silent. According to the MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) website, drunk drivers were responsible for 20,000 deaths during 2010-2011. Yet, the Administration is not decrying alcohol and demanding more safeguards in regard to alcohol.

Why do they attack guns and allow alcohol? The answer is two-fold. First, alcohol consumption is a nationally socially accepted behavior. Regardless of the misery and financial toll that it has inflected, it is acceptable. It is fashionable to meet friends over a drink. It is considered high society to be an imbiber of alcoholic drink. Regardless of its history of leaving families torn apart and destitute, stealing the health of people, drunken shootings, and more; it is still a legally protected social norm.

Second, they permit alcohol and pursue guns, because they seek to gain further control of the populace. Therefore, they must demonize guns and ammunition. In recent days, the Administration and their partners in the media have purported a falsehood (i.e., lie) upon the American public. They are attacking the ownership of guns by equating the terms “semi-automatic” and “assault weapon.” However, they are two different types of weapons. It has amazed me at how many people are ignorant of the differences. Many people seem to believe that a semi-automatic weapon is the same thing as a machine gun. They fail to understand the difference between a semi-automatic and an automatic weapon. The former means that every time the trigger is pulled, a shot is fired. The latter means that, as long as the trigger is squeezed, rounds are being fired. The latter is an assault weapon, and the former is not. Yet, the Administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic weapons. If passed, such a law would ban the majority of pistols in existence today. Revolvers would be permitted, but only for a while. Most rifles would become illegal under such a ban. Essentially, we would be left only with bolt action rifles. Of course, once semi-automatics are banned, it will be only a matter of time until they come for the rest of them. It is essential to disarm the American citizenry, if they are to have more control over it. An armed citizenry is not easily controlled.

Therefore, I would like to propose that we begin demanding that the Administration focus its attention on the real culprit behind the excessive deaths…Alcohol. Let’s put the spotlight on the real issue. We must insist that alcohol have a higher tax on it. We must insist that anyone, who commit a crime while intoxicated, be given mandatory prison time. We must insist that anyone who kills another, as a result of driving under the influence, be given a minimum of twenty-five years in prison. We must insist that anyone who kills another person with any kind of weapon, while intoxicated, must receive the death penalty.

At this point, I feel certain there are some who are questioning my sanity. How could Pastor Wynn be calling for such stiff penalties? May I ask you a question? Why are you not equally incensed at the stiff penalties they are seeking to put on gun ownership? The adage of, “Guns don’t kill people. People kill people,” is unquestionably true. Let’s put the blame where the blame lies…On the perpetrator of the crime!

  1. I agree, and I also believe that if the government would help those with mental problems get the medical treatments they needed, then maybe we would have less violence. The guns DO NOT kill, it’s the person using them.

  2. I agree 100% that the issue should be on alcohol, and have wondered that for many years. Just like when they went on and on about cigarettes, I wondered why they did not go on about alcohol, I believe it is because when they gather in their meeting that alcohol is very important.
