The Day Wayne Got Saved!
I saw a Facebook post on a friend’s page this morning (Tuesday, 02/09/2021) that Wayne Walton had passed away. Wayne’s wife, Sandra, was a member of the church I once pastored in Bay Minette, AL. Sandra had a burden to see her husband, Wayne, come to know Christ.
Wayne was what we Southerners call “a good-ole boy.” He was just a good man who loved his family and was a good husband, dad and provider. I would often visit him and talk to him about Christ, but he never really saw himself as a sinner in need of the Savior. However, we all kept praying for Wayne and trying to show him the love of Christ.
One Saturday, I received a call from Sandra. She asked me if it would be a good thing to miss our church the next morning and go to another local Baptist church where Evangelist J. Harold Smith was going to be preaching. She said she heard that he would be preaching his well-known message “God’s 3 Deadlines.” She said Wayne had agreed to go with her. I assured her that would be a great idea, and to call me afterward and let me know if Wayne responded.
In our church service on Sunday, we had a special prayer time for Wayne. We prayed for his heart to be open and tender toward the gospel. After our Sunday morning service was over, we went home for lunch. As soon as I was walking in the door, the phone rang. It was Sandra. She exclaimed, “WAYNE GOT SAVED!” I shouted “Praise the Lord,” and we rejoiced together.
Let me tell you…WAYNE GOT SAVED! We baptized him at Victory Baptist Church there in Bay Minette. Wayne feel in love with the Savior. He was at every service. He engaged in our outreach and other activities. Wayne was saved!
The last time I saw Wayne was in 1993. I left Bay Minette for another ministry, and we never saw each other again.
I pray today for Sandra and the family. I pray for God’s sustaining grace and comfort to be real to them in the days ahead.
Yet, I do remember well the day that WAYNE GOT SAVED! Because of his faith in Christ, I can look forward to seeing Wayne in Heaven one day and tell him that “I remember when Wayne got saved!” What a day that will be!
I am grateful for people like Wayne who serve as a continual reminder to me that we must not grow weary in our service for the Lord. Our job is to simply sow the seed. He will give the increase!

Let us not grow weary in bringing in the sheaves!
It is my desire and hope that this post will encourage someone today to not give up, to not quit, to keep on sowing and laboring for our blessed Savior’s glory and honor!
