Religious Liberty Vetoed
The State of Georgia has reason to mourn today. In the early morning hours Governor Nathan Deal, with the single stroke of his pen, dealt a blow to religious liberties within the state. The legislature had successfully negotiated the careful wording of Georgia HB 757 and passed the bill. All that was needed for religious practices to gain immunity from frivolous lawsuits and prosecution was for Deal to affix his name to the bill. Yet, due to immense pressure from the minority left, and the effective spin of the media, he exercised his veto power.
Although the bill was introduced two years ago, the past two months have been a time of intense debate and misrepresentation by the media and LGBT forces. They effectively shaped public opinion to perceive the bill as an authorization to discriminate against lesbians, gays and transgendered people. Unfortunately, few people actually bothered to read the bill in its entirety. I did. The bill was very deliberate in insuring that no one, including those of the LGBT, could be discriminated against. Line 210 clearly states that nothing in the bill “shall be construed to permit invidious discrimination on any grounds prohibited by federal or state law.”
The Governor, in his morning news conference attempted to explain his veto choice. Yet, he simply parroted what the left had already been saying, when they argued that such legislation is “something that is best left to the broad protections of the First Amendment.” That statement is a total misrepresentation of the bill. The bill was not for providing the right for a pastor to refuse a same-sex marriage ceremony. The First Amendment already insures the God-given right for me to freely practice my faith. HB 757 simply protected me, or any pastor, from prosecution or lawsuits by a refused same-sex couple. Deal’s veto declares that religious leaders and people of faith are now legal open targets.
While it is true that no pastor in the United States has been sued for refusing to perform a same-sex ceremony, it is only a matter of time now. While the majority of the people in the LGBT movement are not spiteful and litigious, the militant minority has a point to prove and an agenda to further. Therefore, it will not be long until they decide to “make an example” of some pastor. Remember, it was not that long ago when no one had sued a baker and forced them to violate their faith.
At this point, I will again state that I cannot ever concede on this issue. While I will not mistreat or be unkind to any of the LGBT, I cannot participate in or perform a ceremony for a same-sex couple. It is a violation of clear biblical teaching concerning the sanctity and foundation of marriage. I will continue to love those who practice that lifestyle and will continue to be a friend. We have had gays and lesbians attend the services of our church, and they have come back again. I love them. I pray for them. Yet, I cannot violate the Scriptures by agreeing with their lifestyle. Therefore, if I am to be prosecuted for refusal to perform a same-sex ceremony, so be it. My conscience will be clear, because I have chosen to obey God rather than man.
