Be a Man!
The valour and might of real men is mentioned twenty-two times in these verses. In our modern culture, manliness is viewed as a lesser trait. In a day when the male gender has been encouraged to “get in touch with your feminine side,” the Scriptures know of no such side to the male. In a day when gender distinctions have been been declared politically incorrect, the Scriptures remind us often that manliness should be a desired achievement for all males.
This passage describes men who were “helpers in the war…could use both the right hand and the left…men of might, and men of war fit for the battle…whose faces were like the faces of lions…swift as the roes upon the mountains…mighty men of valour…ready armed to war…could keep rank…not of double heart…” The Scriptures place great value on being a real man of courage, strength and honor.
Verse 15 records, “These are they that went over Jordan in the first month, when it had overflown all his banks…” Lesser men would have waited for the flood waters to recede. They would have waited for an “easier” time to cross, when it would be less perilous. Yet, these men of might (v.8), were not to be deterred by the difficulty of the circumstances. There was a cause to be fought for, a mission to be accomplished, so these men with “the faces of lions” (v.8) committed themselves to the task at hand and achieved victory!
As you read this chapter, you almost get the feeling that you have entered the corridor of the Hall of Valor. You read each scriptural epitaph with great admiration of the man to who life it was appended. Our churches…our homes…our country needs such men today. Do such men exist in our day? Yes, there are the occasional reports of honor and valor among men today. Yet, the vast majority of headlines remind us that such manliness is a fading trait. We need parental commitment to raise boys who are trained to be real men. To be biblical men!
