The Power of Confession

Reading: Genesis 42-48

Families are often divided because of hurts inflicted by family members. Hurts of this nature can create a separation that is never repairable, beyond the grace of God. Such is the case with Joseph. As recorded earlier in Genesis, Joseph’s haughty spirit had produced no love among the brethren (Gen. 37:19-20). When the brothers concocted their treacherous scheme, they obviously felt justified in their actions. At the time of their deed, they felt no sympathy for Joseph or remorse for their actions. They obviously knew they should have sympathized for Joseph, because they acknowledged it in Genesis 42:21, “We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.” However, at the moment, they felt completely self-justified in their actions.

There is an old saying that states, “Time heals all wounds.” While the accuracy of that statement is debatable, it is certainly not true when it comes to guilt. Time does not nullify guilt, but it amplifies guilt. Time does not erase guilt, but it exposes guilt. Guilt is a cancer than can only be removed by the surgery of confession. Without confession, guilt will continue its unbridled growth into the conscious and mind of its offender. Guilt has a way of continuing its encroachment until it finally becomes exposed (cf. Num. 32:23).

In today’s reading, Joseph appears to abuse his brothers in order to achieve retribution. However, nothing could be farther from the truth. Although, Joseph is a human character with human flaws, he is also a dramatic Old Testament “type” of Jesus Christ. In the scenes before his brothers, Joseph yearns deeply for a restored fellowship with the family (Gen. 42:24; 43:30). Yet, he knows that for all to be right, there must be a confession of the offense (i.e., the sin). Therefore, he proceeds to give ample opportunity for confession to be made.

Like many believers today, it was difficult for the brothers to openly face their sin. They had betrayed their brother, and deceived their father. It was essential that confession be made. This was not so Joseph could feel better, but so that there might be nothing between them at any level.

Upon Judah’s passionate confession (Gen. 44:16-34), Joseph could no longer restrain his identity (Gen. 45:1-3). Judah’s confession included three necessary elements that are true for all Biblical confessions. First, he admitted he had no defense (Gen. 44:16a, “What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves?”). Second, he admitted that he had sinned against God, and God knew it (Gen. 44:16b, “God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants“). And, third, he submitted to doing anything to make it right (Gen. 44:18-34).

Confession of the sin produced a restoration of the family. It would have been impossible to have a family reunion if the sin had been simply “swept under the rug.” Again, we find the truth of the Biblical principle found in Proverbs 28:13, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”

What relationship is being hindered today because of unconfessed, unresolved sin? Is it worth the separation of friendship and family? Is it worth the risk of going into eternity without reconciliation? Obviously not! Then rectify the matter today and you can be free of guilt at last!
