30th Wedding Anniversary

30 Years Ago Today

It was thirty years ago that I said “I do” to my wonderful bride.  My wife, Kathy, and I were married on July 7, 1979 at 6:30pm at the Bible Baptist Church in Savannah, GA.  The picture on the left shows Kathy’s parents, Pete & Ann Smith, and my parents, Charles & Janice Wynn.  It was a blessing for the ceremony to have been performed by my dad, Charles Wynn.  At that time, he was the pastor of Mount View Baptist Church in Caddo, Alabama.

The Lord gave me a wonderful bride.  Kathy was raised in a Christian home and was a faithful member of Bible Baptist Church, where Dr. Cecil Hodges was the pastor.  I am very grateful that I waited on the Lord to bring me the one that He had for me.  I was never part of the “dating” scene.  Aside from my shyness of those days (hard to believe now), I also believed that God knew who the lady was and where she was.  All I needed to do was wait on Him, and He brought us together at Tennessee Temple University in Chattanooga, TN.  I remember the day I met her, as though it were yesterday.  In those days, Temple served the meals as family style dining.  I sat down at the table, and there she was.  She worked in the dining hall that semester.  I determined then and there to learn more about her.  The next few months was an occasional date.  (If you call it a date.  A chaperone was always with us.  Praise the Lord).  Both Kathy and I needed the Lord to do some work in our lives.  Then, a tragic accident on the campus of TTU caused us to think.  Shortly after that, Kathy and I became engaged in June 1978.

Someone has said, “I never knew what happiness was until I got married. . .and then it was too late!”  Whoever said that should have been blessed with a wife like mine.  I can truly say that I have been greatly blessed with a good and godly wife, and we have been happily married all of these years.

As we began our lives together on that day in 1979, we foresaw ourselves boarding a cruise ship on which would sail the smooth waters of life all the way through our senior years.  We envisioned enjoying the scenery of life as we sailed down its picturesque  shore line.   Of course, that cruise ship has proven to be a bullet train and the years of life have passed swiftly.  Yet, the scenery has been pleasant.  Yes, there have been the storms of life through which we have passed but, with your best friend by your side, they posed no real danger.  We have survived the storms of financial hardship, the deaths of family members, the permanent injury of our son, and more.  The Lord provided strength and direction for each one.

As the Lord introduced two wonderful children into our lives, we began to assume the incredible responsibility of parenthood.  What a shame that the wisdom of age is not granted in our youth.  Yet, with the instruction manual of God’s Word, the children did learn to walk with God.  We are so blessed to have both of our children, and a son-in-law serving alongside us in the ministry.  We rejoice that the Lord has placed His call upon Stephen to carry the gospel to the field of Brazil as a missionary.  We rejoice that Stephanie and Dan have been called into full-time ministry as well.  It was my privilege to be there when the Lord saved Dan in July 2004.

Well, I could reminisce and ramble much longer.  However, I am probably the only one that is enjoying this article.  Yet, I wanted to state publicly, on our 30th Anniversary, that I LOVE MY WIFE.  I love her more today than I ever have. She has made it so easy to love her.  She is a blessing to me and the children.  She is a model mother, wife and pastor’s wife.  I thank the Lord for her.  As we both have crossed the age of 50, I look forward to sailing with her through our sunset years (although it is still High Noon! 🙂 ).  I look forward to watching the Lord’s continued work in our lives with her.  No man could ask for a better companion through life.  She has made this life seem a little like Heaven.  I look forward to the next thirty.

Thank you Kathy. . .I Love You!
